Big Bend Landscapes (Joe and Betty Moore Texas Art Series, 12)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (November, 2002)
Authors: Dennis Blagg and Ron Tyler
Average review score:

A joy to simply page through at leisure
Big Bend Landscapes by Texas painter Dennis Blagg is a breathtaking, coffee-table artbook of oil on canvas landscapes so captivating, they seize and hold one's attention as surely as the finest of photographs. Mood, mystery, natural serenity in the Big Bend National Park of Texas fill these compiled outdoor paintings austere mountains and dry deserts with a very special dignity and beauty. A joy to simply page through at leisure, each individual painting is enhanced with a brief but informative commentary in this outstanding and memorable collection.

In Love with Landscapes
Unique landscape artist, Dennis Blagg, shares selected paintings and drawings of West Texas. He captures more than the camera can and his style evokes a viseral response. Perhaps you must have "been there, done that" to appreciate that each one is a gift. Blagg also shares brief notes with each entry. That adds a personal touch with a underlying theme of conservation for this special landscape. I must confess I skipped right past the introduction by Ron Tyler and straight to the views of the Chisos that I can't get out of my mind.

Big Bend Landscapes is a feast for the heart and soul for all you Big Bend National Park lovers out there and believe me there's a lot of them. Dive into all the moods of the desert and let it carry you away. I just returned from a trip to Big Bend on Feb 25, 2003 and my question is "Was it real or was it Blagg?" Make the book purchase and do the trip and you be the judge.

Confession of Jack Straw
Published in Paperback by Black Heron Press (April, 1996)
Author: Simone Zelitch
Average review score:

This book will make you want to know more ...
about the times, characters and incidents written of. This is a story of a revolution eating its children, yet again. The author does everyting she attempts flawlessly, and I never read anything by her without diving into the Web to find more. In this case I was led to William Morris, and his "Dream of John Ball", published in 1886, and available on the Web. If you are thinking of reading this book then do so! I cannot believe you could be sorry, excellent stuff.

I Was Swept Away By "Jack Straw"
I was thrilled by the political conviction, insanity, morality, and insecurity that turned ordinary peasants into revolutionary figures and the stuff of legend. Ms. Zelitch also finds the irony and humor in this grim chapter of history. She tells the story with an amazing use of language. My favorite: "We walked through a night full and loving as a cat." The tale starts out small, then sweeps along like a wave. I was up 'til all hours to read the last third of the book in a single sitting.

Dangerous to Love (Silhouette Intimate Moments, 903)

Awesome!
This is the first in the series of Division One stories. Dan & Jamie both agents for Division One have been fighting off a strong attraction for each other for many years. Each engrossed in their own reasons why this match would never work. But tragedy forces them into close quarters and to face their worst fears. At the same time they kind of stand in each others shoes for a short while and suddenly what seemed cut and dry is not really. This story leaves you at the edge of your seat and is hard to put down. You laugh, you cry, and your heart skips a beat as you turn each page. I have not been disappointed. I'm off to read the 2nd book in this series "Spies, Lies, and Lovers". If you can get your hands on a copy of this book it's a keeper. Kudos to you Ms. Hayes.

A fast, sexy read.
I loved this book! Like every one else, I've been hungry for the spies we used to read a lot, and this really satisfied my appetite. The sexual tension is terrific. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Discovering Wild Plants: Alaska, Western Canada, the Northwest
Published in Paperback by Alaska Northwest Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Janice F. Schofield, Janice J. Schofield, and Richard W. Tyler
Average review score:

An excellent resource with high-quality photos.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly, from it's interesting tidbits on historic uses of plants, to the explanations of known toxic principles within plants. The cautions about harvest, use, and overuse are well-stated. The descriptions enhance the line-drawings, and each plant description comes with an excellent photograph, making this a terrific guide for identification of wild edibles!

Wow, what a field guide, and check out all those recipes!
I just got this book (fourth printing, 1998) in my mail, and I can testify that it's well worth the money. It's a really good field guide to plants of The Far North, be it Alaska or Finland.

In addition to excellent pictures (which really show you clearly how to tell this plant apart from others) you'll frequently run across a sentence that goes something like "So-and-so says in his/her book that it's edible after it's been dried /boiled /whatever, but my taste tests implied ...".

Truly outstanding research and practical information, both on medicinal and culinary uses of these plants, make this an invaluable addition to the library of anybody interested in plants in the Far North.

Great work, Janice!

First Hundred Words (First Hundred Words)

My daughter's *favorite* book
What a wonderful book! My daughter fell in love with this book and, at 21 months, has outgrown it but hasn't found another to take its place. She and this book were inseperable for quite a while and I'm waiting to see what book she really takes to next.

I'm personally impressed enough that I'm planning to get the foreign language versions so she can pick up a little of that, too.

A yellow duck in every picture!
Stephen Cartwright's illustrations make the 100 words come to life. Each word has a picture. Then, the magic of this book is that those pictures are incorporated into a picture which takes up the top 2/3rds of two open pages. Not only can the child associate the picture with a word, they can associate the pictures with objects in the scenes straight out of family life.

At the beginning of the book, Betty Root (a language consultant) explains how the process of learning starts at a very early age. Once children are able to recognize objects, they also need to see them in pictures. She notes how children will make many associations of words and objects even before they start talking.

The first words are "Daddy, Mommy, boy, girl, baby, dog and cat." The last page has words like "Sweater, table and window." Most of the words are all in a row at the base of two open pages. The scenes from family life above, all contain a picture of a yellow duck. The duck is hidden so well in some places, even I had to really look for it.

This book is also available in French, German and Spanish. I love to wrap this book up along with a baby shower gift. What is better than helping a new parent find a great book they will enjoy reading to their child? Babysitting? Well, I think you know what I mean!

Great Fun for All Ages
My daughters are 6 years old and, we just discovered these books. They absolutely love them and, so do I. These are fun and original - they make reading fun for everyone. Thanks to the authors and illustrators. The pictures are adorable, too. It's hard to find books with great stories and pictures but, these have it. Thanks again. We hope to get the entire series.
an appreciative mom

Excellent book for toddlers and new readers alike!
I was fortunate to happen upon this book--my 21 month old son loves it and asks for it by name every night. It's has the kind of story that keeps kids engaged, and has a fun ending that even parents will enjoy. The rhyming text makes it great fun for kids to complete sentences as we go. Plus, there is the added feature of there being a small duck bystander on nearly every page, which is great fun for children this age to find, over and over...
